5 Bedrooms · Sleeps 10
Quinta de Macedos is a table wine producing estate enjoying a stunning setting in the heart of the Rio Torto Valley (a tributary south of the Douro), comprising of a holiday home with 5 bedroom suites and a swimming pool, a winery and wine lodge. It is surrounded by 7 hectares of terraced vineyards located between 100m and 200m above sea level facing north, west and east – a place to completely relax in peaceful retreat!
The main Quinta building is about 100 years old with meter thick walls – its rooms used to house field workers away from their own homes during the grape-picking season – and it has recently been converted into a spacious, modern and very comfortable family holiday villa. There are mosquito nets on all the windows; air-conditioning is available throughout, keeping the quinta cool in the very hot Douro summer months; whilst wooden floors with under-floor heating as well as various fireplaces makes the interiors cosy during the cooler months.
The kitchen is fitted with all modern conveniences and WiFi is provided free of charge. There is a very comfortable and spacious TV room providing a great place to escape the hottest hours of the day or for a cinema evening for all the family, as well as offering various boards games - this room opens onto a vine-covered-pergola area for outdoor dining with a barbeque. There’s also table tennis and a poolside putting green, and the pool has solar panel heating. But most special about the Quinta, are the different areas for relaxing and enjoying the bucolic views, read a good book or sip a White Port Tonic (a refreshing drink to try when you’re in the Douro)!
This is a working estate with an organic principle, so no artificial pesticides or fertilizers are used at Quinta de Macedos. The natural wild flowers that cover the terraces are controlled through repeated trimming and there are lots of trees yielding delicious seasonal fresh fruit such as cherries, figs, damsons, peaches, apples, pears, oranges and lemons as well estate produced olive oil, for guests to enjoy when staying here. Early mornings 3 times a week, a small white van stops by with other local produce from the region such as fresh bread, eggs & fruit for you to buy.
The Douro Valley offers numerous port wine tasting possibilities as well as some gastronomic delights. From Quinta de Macedos you can take a number walks of varying degrees of difficulty, as well as enjoy a picnic in a charming stop between vineyards. You can also canoe on the river Douro or enjoy a 2 hours up-river cruise on a traditional Rabelo boat from the quayside at Pinhão. Or if you rather fancy a bit of pampering, the 6 Senses Spa (http://www.sixsenses.com/resorts/douro-valley/destination) as well as the Vila Gale in Régua, both offer some great treatments.
During the harvest season (September and October), try one of the 4-nights fully catered “wine weekends” hosted by the producer himself, which includes a guided tour of the estate and getting involved in whatever “the job of the day” is (picking or treading grapes, mixing or tasting, bottling, etc) as well as a few extras.
